The Iddefjord (Audafjord) runs along the Norwegian – Swedish border from the Singlefjord. The Iddefjord separates the Swedish province of Bohuslän in the county of Västra Götaland from the Norwegian municipality of Halden in the county of Østfold. It opens to the Skagerrak via the Svinesund (Swynesund) and Hvalder archipelago (a cluster of classic skerries). The outermost stretch is called the Ringdalsfjord, but from the point where it makes a sharp bend and further south, it is called the Iddefjord.

Two of the most important finds of the early viking era were found in the area of Ringdalsfjord and Iddefjord. Both were boatgraves associated with the Ringslinger and Yngling dynasties. The first found at Gokstad has been tree-ring dated to 890 AD and is presumed to be the grave of Olaf Geirstad-Alf, a petty king of Vestfold and member of the House of Yngling, who died about this time, according to the Heimskringla. The Gokstad ship is now housed in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo.

The second ship is directly related to the Ringslinger dynasty. There is evidence that the ship and its contents was disturbed and raided. The ships internment into its current burial mound dates from 834, but parts of the ship date from around 800, and the ship itself is thought to be older. The Oseberg ship contains the skeletons of two women. The opulence of the burial rite and the grave-goods suggests that this was a burial of very high status among a people that engaged in long distance trade (The grave good included silk fabric and a peacock). According to Per Holck of Oslo University, the younger woman's mitochondrial haplogroup was discovered to be U7 indicating origins in the Pontic littoral, Black Sea Region, and most probably Iran. It is believed that one of the women may have been Queen Åsa a known seeress in the Ringslinger lineage.
